I'll disagree with your spurious claims about the company. Also note the
company history on the website itself; which clearly, you have not
visited yet.

Comparable pricing for purchasing those books in shops, each being in
the order of magnitude of $90.00 to $120.00 each makes it about $500.00.
Include the time it takes to get to the bookshops, finding the books,
selecting and then completing the task, adds up to about $600.00. Now
the opportunity cost to me of doing that is (based on 2-3 hours):
cycling time, kayaking time, or driving time into the blue mountains,
potentially sacrificing a full day bushwalking or canyoning or
rockclimbing.
Further, there is the other issues of long-term storage space,
depreciation write-downs due to the rapid out-dating of the information
(in the case of Photoshop, indeed it is already outdated as they are now
at CS4 - but you still pay $75.00 to $80.00 or more for those CS3
printed books). Then there is the transport freight charged against my
fuel bill for cartage to and from client sites and my home base. Time
taken for correctly shelving them in the correct locations on-site or at
home-base. Then there is dusting and cleaning time (which I wouldn't
necessarily do but for the sake of a good argument I include it ;-)
lol).
Purchasing via pdf was a useful change for me, I can read them on my
computer, which makes it easier to carry in trains, easier to carry on
planes - not to mention the reduction in excess baggage risks for me.
Searching for information is vastly easier with the pdfs because they
are working reasonably well with the Adobe pdf word search feature,
hence saving further time when doing client jobs. And for anyone who has
coded with html/CSS/ javascript, the downtime experienced while finding
solutions to problems can be expensive. Not only that, at many client
sites, my favourite research websites and snippet sites are now blocked,
so any resources I have at hand easily are much much more valuable.
Also, something it took me a while to figure on btw; it is saving trees
- I have probably fifteen to twenty books at home I have barely used
because they are for reference so I have only ever used may be a dozen
pages in each, and they amount to easily 350 pages (averaged) in each -
that was a lot of trees pulped! You know; I love books, but book-love is
killing our world, lets all face it! And God knows how I love trees and
oxygenated fresh air.
Yes, in fact I disagree with you, my costings were conservative weren't
they?
Here Endeth the lesson. May God Bless to you the understanding of the
meaning found in this reading. Amen. ;-)
Take Care Brian!
Regards
Warren

Not quite, Warren,
SitePoint is an American company with a Melbourne presence.
Can't see how you got $600's worth for one US$29.95 payment; the offer
was five books priced @ US$29.95 = US$147.95 = AU$232 approx. Bear in
mind that after the initial printing to pdf, the cost per copy is
essentially zero - value? Hmmm.
Brian.

Remember, they are a Melbourne based company.
I GOT $600.00 Australian books for $29.95 and you know what, I
can take them anywhere instead of having to take books printed with me,
they are on the computer as and when I need them.
