I am not a big fan of the abbreviations, but resort to the few I know
because I am frustratingly slow and incompetent at using a mobile phone
key pad to write text messages. Once, after ten minutes of concentrated
effort, I got within one character of completing a message, then managed
to lose it, which left me foaming at the mouth with the SMSer's equivalent
of road rage :-)

One solution I have found is to send text messages from the internet. My
home ISP (Exetel) allows me 30 free texts a month; after that, they cost a
mere 5 cents each, all from a very neat web interface complete with
address book. And each one can be typed using a full computer keyboard,
allowing me to express myself without resorting to abbreviations - its Gr8
M8 :-)

Check out what your ISP offers in this regard. There are also free
internet SMS services, I believe, although I am told some of them involve
advertising - Google "free SMS" to learn more.
