I can sense how completely I've failed, Christine, and it concerns me.
Possibly the way a friend labeled a recent theory of mine ("good
discussion point for a party") about the nature of language implies a
pattern.=20

In the interests of the science of communication Matthew, I want you to
know
that you have abjectly and totally failed to communicate your meaning to
me.

I have no idea how your statement "I find his application of linguistics
satisfying" says anything - I can't hook it onto anything in my brain in
order to contextualise it. You may belong to the generation that uses
language as I-centred self-expression. That is certainly what you seem
to
be doing here.=20

I have given you a lot of information about who I am as a learner, and
you
have not changed your communication style to suit that. At the very
least
you could have assumed I am totally dumb, and dumbed down what you are
saying to suit a moron. On the other hand you could have taken on board
what I said about applied knowledge and tried to apply this "satisfying
application of linguistics" to something in order to illustrate what you
mean to me. You did neither, so you did not take on board the idea that
you
as the communicator are responsible to ensure the success of the
communication.

This seems to be what is happening to "communication" across the board.

(Please take this as intended - as an intellectual debate - not a
personal
attack - for me all debate has to be "applied".)

I don't think so. My reference to Bordieu was intended to be a pointer
because I find his application of linguistics satisfying.=3D20

Yep, so is it qualitatively changing people in a permanent kind of way -
particularly in the way they communicate?

(...which we are currently failing to do cos you love pure knowledge and
I
only deal with applied knowledge - and I am trying to bully you into
applying what you know to flesh and blood - and as we all know, if your
brain has not been trained to apply knowledge, you just can't do it -
now
that's an example of the importance of the way the brain works when it
comes
to the success or failure of communication.)

((and that run-on sentence above will have failed to communicate its
meaning
to some because they could not get past the structure - and this
sentence
will have stopped some in their tracks because they hate sentences that
being with prepositions - but I quite like both and can read run on
sentences that being with prepositions quite easily.))

Sorry to be obtuse. The observation relates to notions of self
determination and identity. I don't know what 'a phase' means really,
but certainly it is clear that young people usually try to generate
solidarity by appeals to notions of originality. It's a kind of
community building exercise, I think.

Hi Matthew

How does this affect us or relate to us? How do I integrate what you
have
said into my awareness of how to relate to a member of the texting
generation? Are they being dumbed down? Or are they morphing into a
different type of human being? Or are they just going through a phase?
What is happening to human beings - and in the process, to our notion of
what communication is?

Nikki - FWIW, Pierre Bordieu is useful. His theories of language stem
(he says) from a quibble with Saussure. He posits that all language is
'loaded' with political connotations ("politics begins at home").

He thinks that the imperative of linguistic orthodoxy, say, in France
(his country of origin, but this would also apply - more visibly because
more recent - in, say, Italy) is allied with the notion of the 'nation
state'.

Hi Everyone!

Yesterday as I was trawling through the Macquarie Dictionary, I noticed
a page at the back of the book dedicated to SMS English (I often refer
to it as: Smenglish.. and I got to thinking about why some techwriters
pull up our noses at Smenglish (or do we?) and why? Consider the
following example:
