Whoops! That second example should be:
You, or your partner, are happy.

Subject: atw: Grammar question
Can anyone tell me whether these examples are correct and why:
=20
Bob is happy
Bob or Bob's partner is happy
Bob and Bob's partner are happy.
You are happy
You or your partner are happy.
You and your partner are happy.
My feeling is that it should be:
=20
Bob is happy
Bob, or Bob's partner, is happy
Bob and Bob's partner are happy.
You are happy
You, or your partner, is happy.
You and your partner are happy.
But I'm probably wrong!
