Hi Geoff,
I like Pete's solution, never tried it myself. I usually go back to the
beginning of the document and renumber all the numbered lists. Time
consuming, I know, but it usually works.
This bug disappeared in Word 2000. If I ever find out who put it back in,
I'm going to figure out how to make that person's life miserable.

Hi Geoff,
It's a notorious bug that has been in Word since I don't know when...
The solution is to create a new paragraph with the text and then restart the
numbering of that para - that is, place your cursor at the start of the
numbered sentence, press Enter (to create the new para), restart as per
either of the ways you describe, and then delete the now empty recalcitrant
para. This should work.
The bug seems to occur most when you paste content and then apply numbered
styles... or when you copy numbered lists and move them around and want to
restart them.

... it's time to apply for a job as a garbage collector. It would certainly
be less frustrating than using MS-bloody-Word.
Why oh why can't I restart the numbering of a numbered paragraph. I do
everything that the OLH tells me (right-click the paragraph and select
Restart Numbering), but nought happens. With my cursor in the paragraph, I
display the Bullets and Numbering... dialog, but the Restart Numbering radio
button is greyed out. I can restart the numbering of other numbered
paragraphs in the vicinity, but not this recalcitrant bugger.
Any clues ... before I pull an early cork and call the local council?
