Not file bloat as such – I just experimented with this and didn’t change the
size at all.
However, I forgot to say that I am getting the worst problems when I am
using SnagIt to do the screen captures. So it could relate to that old
problem of Word somehow appending graphics in the clipboard instead of
cleaning them out. Back in Word 6 days there used to be a way of manually
cleaning out the clipboard if you were doing a lot of cut and paste. But I
had presumed this was all history with the obvious availability of the
clipboard in later versions
I usually work with the clipboard open, and I haven’t thought to clean the
captures out – so I suppose at times there could be up to 20 in there – I
will check that one as well. I presume when it is shut it is not appending.

Hi Christine,
This is also maybe worth a try ... I can remember when table bloat was a
real problem in Word 97 days.
The fix was to save the file as RTF, open the RTF file in Word by
double-clicking on the icon in Explorer then save as a word document again.
Somehow this had a semi-miraculous effect on file bloat.
... nothing to lose by trying.

Thanks all
I do disk cleanup and defrag regularly.
I will try the suggestions about checking table size and making sure it is
well within a page. I never let table cells split, so that is not the
problem, but there are a number of tables running over more than one page.
So I will try splitting those.
I don’t have any utilities any more – hated Norton and so did not get it for
my laptop. So I won’t get a utility unless someone recommends a specific
one.
You are right that 4mb is not big. I think the issue is repagination
related to the tables. There seems to be no way to turn off background
repagination, which I think there used to be in earlier versions.
I rang the vendor for advice. I have 1 gig of Ram but apparently it is
underpowered. So I have ordered faster RAM (I did not even know RAM had a
speed!) and have ordered a faster CPU (at discontinued line prices which is
a bit scary for a 1 year old computer – but they tell me any model now has a
6 month life expectancy before it is replaced by something newer and
better).
So I will report back once I have tried everything above.
Ta all, Christine

Hi Chistine, I agree with the previous replies. I would be looking at a disk
cleanup then a defrag, and if they have not been done for a while, then
expect it to take some time. Sometimes for systems that have not had a
defrag for a very long time, then you may need to do two or three. Either
way, do the first one at the end of the working day.
There are some software utilities that do offer this type of task, notably
Norton/Symantec. But I wouldn't want Symantec software on any of my systems
anymore - bloatware and then some. There are lots of utilities available by
doing Google searches (for example like the one I have just performed: "disk
clean-up utilities"). Some are not very good, some will be absolutely
excellent.
Lots of RAM is recommended for Office 2007 if you want to be a power user. I
have nothing more to say about the Word issues of repaginating, as they are
pretty good suggestions that I would employ. But I am suspicious; 4Mb is not
THAT big for well constructed Word files these days...
Warren.

Hi guys
I am using Word 2007 for a document with lots of tables. My document has
now reached 4mb and is pushing the limits of my system. I have worked on
much larger documents (up to 20mb) on this computer, but am thinking that
the effort of repaginating all those tables is the problem. I intend to
keep the tables – they are much easier to maintain than numbered lists and
floating graphics, and I would rather not split the file.
Can anyone tell of me of any utilities that are designed to clean up the
computer, the RAM, the document, the screen shots – anything that will
reduce file size or free up some “grunt” for my computer to handle this
file.
Short of that, I will have to upgrade my computer, as there is bigger and
nastier to come.
Ta, Christine
