atw: Re: General question

Hi Christine,
A tip I heard many years ago, which I'm sure still applies to
current versions of Word, for bloated Word documents:

Copy the entire contents of your Word document, EXCEPT the last
paragraph marker, then paste into a new document/template.

If your original Word document contains any excess baggage this should
get rid of it and reduce the file size.

If your Word document doesn't contain any excess baggage, I guess it's
back to looking at your PC.

While there are plenty of utilities around for cleaning up computers I
would start with the inbuilt tools, as already suggested. You can click
Start > Help and Support to access many of the Windows system tools and
get an idea of how healthy your computer is.

Good luck,

Christine I don't think your problem is related to the Word file size.
4mb for a file is not really that large these days, even for Word,
unless you are running a very old PC, and even an XP system of 512 Mb
should be able to handle that.
In my experience of Word, documents with lots of tables can cause
problems, so that is more likely to be your problem. What type of system
are you running? Are you trying to run Office 2007 on an underpowered
system?
Given that 1 GB of RAM should cost you $50 - $70 these days and a Video
card with 512 Mb RAM about $100, that's a cheap way to get more grunt
out of your system. However while you will get a performance increase,
that may not solve the problem with Word and lots of tables.
What are the specs of your machine?
Cheers Mark

        Hi guys

I am using Word 2007 for a document with lots of tables. My
document has now reached 4mb and is pushing the limits of my system. I
have worked on much larger documents (up to 20mb) on this computer, but
am thinking that the effort of repaginating all those tables is the
problem. I intend to keep the tables - they are much easier to maintain
than numbered lists and floating graphics, and I would rather not split
the file.

Can anyone tell of me of any utilities that are designed to
clean up the computer, the RAM, the document, the screen shots -
anything that will reduce file size or free up some "grunt" for my
computer to handle this file.

Short of that, I will have to upgrade my computer, as there is
bigger and nastier to come.

        Ta, Christine
