Lots more in the list of course, but its the first time I've seen this
one.  It appears to me that I have to give permission for my personal
and sensitive information to be made available to a wide range of
organisations.

I am currently the only person (well, I guess in Australia), who has the 
full and complete list of STC Australian chapter members. I have not been 
approached (e.g. through my STC email alias) by any recruitment firm to 
verify anyone's status as a member or claims linked to being a member. 
I've only been looking after the membership for a couple of months now, so 
I can only speak for this period of time. 
Ethically, I think I'd have issues about discussing any member details 
with non-members (and non-committee members), and all I could say about 
anyone is whether they are a member or not. I'd have to check whether 
there are any rules about that, but I don't know that I'd even *want* to 
tell anyone that an individual was or was not a member. With STC anyway, 
everyone gets a membership card ... so a person could always show their 
card to prove their membership. 

I could only see the point of checking with any professional org if there 
was an issue of certification.
