An outside editor sent in an article from one of his authors that was
running long to ask if I thought it would be okay.
It's 30 pages; our guidelines state 12 to 15 pages. We'll go longer, but
double is just too long. Accordingly, I asked the editor to have the
author tighten it up, at least to under 20 pages, by condensing a few
(rather rambling) sections and moving two lists from the text into
sidebars.

The editor just sent back the revised paper. The author did a bit of
condensing, but his primary method for shortening the text of his paper
was to reduce the font size from
12 point to 10 point.
