If you do a good job as a contractor (and most do), I?ve found the company 
is more likely to offer you a permanent position. They realise the 
benefits of having us, but try and reduce the cost.

As an observation about contracts, first gigs and rates? I put forward the 
argument that it depends on the type of work and what you?re getting for 
it. A few years ago I took a three month contract at $28 an hour, why? 
Because I wanted to learn FrameMaker and Visio. The company knew I had no 
experience with either,and were happy to let me learn as I went along. I 
also got to learn SAP application wrappers. As I see it, I got paid to 
gain valuable experience.
