atw: Re: First Gig Coming Up

Good luck. If you go a little high (based on things like a survey of others)
and are prepared to come down, you might get good money (though you risk not
getting the job). If you go low for fear of not getting the job, you might find
you could have got more. I find it better to go a little high, there's always
jobs and I'd rather not work for cheapskates. Nor do I want people to think of
me as cheap. Sometimes if people pay more for you they think you're valuable
(especially if you do a good job). Sometimes when people pay less for you, they
think you're not worth much as an employee (even if you do a good job). It's
all in the balance.

Michelle

Thank you both Rhonda and Michelle. The Minister of War and Finance (my
lovely wife) thought I was a bit cheap. I'll take the info on board and see
what the client's prepared to offer.

Cheers
Shane

$35 sounds very low. Take a look at the latest salary surveys done by the
Australia Chapter of STC (http://www.stc-aus.org.au/surveys.htm;
specifically:

Hi All,

I'm going for my first paying contract gig. I was wondering if you could
give me some idea as to rates. My hunting around tells me that for an ex
high end technical trainer (cisco, microsoft, etc) with 15 years of IT
experience I should be able to get around $35 per hour for my first real
tech writer job.

Could you give me your thoughts on whether you think this is fairly close to
the money?

Cheers
Shane
