Don't imagine you will be much more appreciated as a contractor.

The great advantage is that you can cut and run before the lack of
appreciation gets too numbing or the politics too convoluted. There is much
more variety, and if you don't like a particular work environment, you know
it is finite. I have been contracting for nearly 20 years. In that time I
have had no trouble getting work except for 2000-2003 when I was 'between
contracts' for longer than I would have liked. This year has been fine in
Brisbane - four short - and interesting - contracts in a row with no down
time between them. Canberra is almost always good if you can stand it. You
need to know and understand your own market, and if we go through another
crash like the one we have just had, then mobility is pretty useful.

No-one is really sure if we are out of that slump yet, but I am being told
that all the new systems that went in for Y2K and GST are now hitting their
use by date, so there will be another IT development boom that should keep
us all employed for a while. But it's always a gamble.

Thanks Damien,
It really is quite a hard call to make. Contract work sounds so much
more interesting and appealing when you are bored and feel unappreciated
in a permanent job. On the other hand, hanging around at home between
jobs must be quite stressful as well. I am really trying to get a feel
for how other writers decide which is the best option for them.
Good luck with your move.
Ilana
