atw: Re: FW: One Laptop Per Child, Learning Systems '08 Opens (OT)

I saw a program on '60 minutes' on this company, and it was quite impressive. It is not only for children in Africa, but for children in under-developed countries in general. It has a battery that lasts very long, and is also much less fragile than our regular computers. What's more, some of the technology has already penetrated in the regular laptops. This is the idea of an MIT professor by the name of Negroponte, and there is already competition to their product from more established manufacturers. It costs them $100 USD to make one, and of course it is given away for free...To my knowledge they have a long queue of countries, and they do not intend to sell them in the regular stores, because they don't want to kil the market for regular computers.

This is designed for children in Africa – but what are the implications?
Why only third world children?

Interesting use of Open Source software.

1. One Laptop Per Child - A Learning Laptop! The One Laptop Per Child
machine, designed by MIT Media Lab, for children in the third world, arrived
at the MASIE Center as we were winding down our trip to Africa.

Here is a quick review of the laptop - which is quite impressive. There is
also a link to a video by the designer. Here is the URL:
