Framemaker (7.2, at least) has a checkbox to automagically change two
spaces into one.

I use OpenOffice to reformat Gutenberg texts and save as Aportis so I
can read them on my elderly Palm. I found double space indents display
as single space. 

On the other hand, the rand function in Microsoft Word 2003 puts double
spaces between "the quick red fox" sentences.

I think the double-space-after-period format:
1. is archaic
2. adds an unnecessary complication to maintaining documents
3. encourages bad multiple-space formatting habits.

When I QA a final draft I hunt and destroy all double spaces.
