Thanks Naomi, that worked a treat!
I experimented a bit, and it seems you can even select
a blank cell above each column (without column
headings) and that works too.

Thanks Howard, that worked too. For some reason, Excel
added 2001 and 2006 to the X axis (without a plot
above them). I found you can then right-click on the
chart body or background, choose Chart Type, and
choose Column, and you get the same result as you do
when you select a blank cell above each column -- 2001
and 2006 disappear again from the X axis.
Very curious results, but handy to know when you want
to make a chart of changes over time!
