I second the Word/FrameMaker/XML inclusion proposal proffered by Melanie. 
As for the developers, you can make the same deal I made many years ago 
with an irritating little lapdog belonging to one of my wife's relatives: 
"You don't pee on me and I won't pee on you".  Except in this case the 
deal is "You don't modify my manuals and I won't modify your code". Sounds 
win-win to me!
