I stand partially corrected.

MS Access, off the shelf and out of its box won't do the job unless you build (and extensively test across distributed environments) something with it, essentially equating to what Microsoft has already done with SourceSafe, but that's no mean feat and collective brain drain will result.

If pain persists, see your UNIX guru.
