There is actually a way you can do this, though whether it's worth the
effort probably depends on factors like how long your document is and
how likely the table/figure numbers are to change.
It relies on the fact that when Word inserts table and figure captions
for you it uses so-called SEQ fields to maintain the numbering. To see
this, right-click on the table or figure number in a caption and select
Toggle Field Codes. You'll see something like { SEQ Table \* ARABIC } or
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC }.
If you select the first and last captions in your range in turn and use
Insert | Bookmark... to give them bookmark names, say StartTbl and
EndTbl, then you can use SEQ fields again to refer to your table range,
by using an expression like "Tables { SEQ Table StartTbl } to { SEQ
Table EndTbl }". (Replace "Table" by "Figure" if you want a range of
figures.)
Here the expressions { SEQ Table StartTbl } etc aren't typed literally
but stand for fields that you insert either (a) by typing Ctrl-F9 to
insert the field markers { ... } then typing the relevant text inside or
(b) by using Insert | Field... and selecting SEQ in the list box.
(Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you've known for years!) A field
containing SEQ Table BookmarkName gives the value of the table sequence
number that appears in the range with the specified bookmark name.
As usual I've taken a couple of days to get round to this reply, so it
may be too late for your current need. But at least you'll know for next
time ...

Subject: atw: Cross referencing a range of tables/figures in Microsoft
Word
Hi everyone
I am trying to work out a way to cross reference a RANGE of tables (or
figures) in word. For example, I have a series of four consecutive
figures numbered 1,2,3,4.
How do I use the cross referencing function so that the end result is
'...blah blah detailed in Figures 1-4.'?
Thanks in advance
Debbie
