I finally sorted out my problem with converting Word to PDF. Or maybe it
was just a workaround.
I decided to convert the document into Publisher. This was a non-trivial
task, as much of it required another round of formatting, but when I
printed it to Adobe PDF, it looked just fine.
Maybe I've learnt something about trying to do too much with Word!
Thank you again, very sincerely, to everyone who made suggestions.
Howard
