My post said "the document size is shown in the Print dialog box as
279.4mm x 215.9mm, while the page size is 296.7mm x 209.9mm (A4)". The
latter is very close to the correct specification for A4 (it's usually
297mm x 210mm). The former is the one that I want to control, and when I
found it in the conversion settings dialog box I thought I'd got the
solution. Because it's significantly narrower than the page size, I was
getting unwanted white space at the edge of my document. But my attempts
to fix it didn't work.
The Properties form in the Printers and Faxes dialog box shows A4.

Howard,
Your original message said something about paper size, with dimensions
that certainly don't match A4 -- they looked like "Letter", from memory.
They must be coming from the printer setup somewhere! What do you see if
you select AdobePDF from the Printers and Faxes list (Start button), and
look at Properties?
Another point, though: you're well advised to have AdobePDF set as default
printer before you even launch Word. You can't do much to stop Word from
throwing its weight around, but forcing it to use the same printer
settings throughout does make a difference.
