I noticed a lot of the tools are for Framemaker, can BC be applied to
other apps like Word or Excel, or even pdf files?

Yep, it's a fantastic tool. Saved my time/bacon on many occasions at a

previous workplace. Along with a few basic, sensible, manual
procedures, 
BC made it feasible for us to manage a huge collection of text files in

the absence of a full-on content management and version control
system.
