Is Mirriam-Webster's not an approved dictionary?

This is yet another case of evolving language. Although you will not find the
word in any approved dictionary, you will find it in a large number of articles
on the internet.
However, if you really want to go against the "technical/internet-used" word
and prefer an approved word, I would go with Rhonda's suggestion of dismantle.
Disband implies taking apart a group of people, not a group of things.
