Helpful listmembers, including Craig and Michael,
Thanks for the suggestions - I've tried them (mainly) and can't get them=20
to work for me. I still get the =BB (double arrow, ALT+175) being replaced =
with " (double closing quotes). This happens whether I select the=20
characters and copy them into the dialog box or whether I use ALT+0187.=20
Everything looks fine in the dialog box, but when the character is=20
replaced in the Word doc, it's double closing quotes. FWIW, I'm on Word=20
2000.
I think I'll stick to manually deleting the spaces around the character.
Thanks anyway,
KT

A couple of things I can think of that might (or might not) have a bearing
on this:
a) the version of Word you're using
b) the way you represented the character in question
Instead of using Alt+175, try using Alt+0187 (which is what Character Map
lists as the keystroke sequence). The two sequences usually give the same
result, but maybe they don't always, which might be the cause of your
problem.=20
Another approach is to copy the three characters from the document, paste
them into both the "Find what" and "Replace with" text boxes, then delete
the spaces from the latter. (This might have been what you did anyway, in
which case I'm back to plan A, above.)
