I've just used this strategy for a Functional Requirements document that
needs every single requirement (and there are zillions) uniquely numbered so
that each can be referenced in a test plan that will be based on the FR doc.

Normally I'd steer well clear of Word and use Frame for this type of thing,
but because design, development and testing for this project have all been
outsourced to separate parties (a stroke of genius thought up by some bean
counter that is turning out to be the most frustrating and inefficient and
slow way to do things I've *ever* seen) I won't have control of the document
after its initial release and Word has of course been decreed to be the
common editor.
 
I've used this method to number sections, paragraphs, lists within
paragraphs, and lists within tables and its working like a charm. 
I have styles for:
 - four levels of heading for the sections and paragraphs,
i.e., 
1
1.1
1.1.1
1.1.1.1
 - for a numbered list that restarts after a level 4 heading, 
   1.
   2.
   3. etc)
 - and for another numbered list used within tables (also 1., 2., 3. etc) -
this one also restarts after a level 4 heading. (I needed a separate style
for this because the table lists need no indentation before the numbers.)
 
I've attached a toolbar to the document with H1, H2, H3, H4,
RequList(renamed H5) and RequListTable(renamed H6) style buttons so that now
any fool (sorry, random software engineer) who updates this document after
I've finished with it should be able to apply the right style in the right
place without breaking the numbering - unless of course they forget to put
in a level 4 heading somewhere. Even if they do there will still be unique
numbers to refer to.

I have found this method of numbering much simpler to use (once set up) than
sequence fields, but I think its probably most useful in documents with a
highly regular structure.
