That's a good point. Could result in strange constructions and imprecision. But
some common operations, such as saving a file, can be quarantined as a separate
subhead section.

Well, no reason it couldn't turn into something quite like that if you are free
with the permissions you give out..
Most current usages are for publication / internal authoring and control, I
think.

Several fairly heavy-duty / pricey jobs like Documentum and the IXIASoft toolset
which is being packaged with JUST etc.
Then there's DocZone, which I only heard about recently... but there are
undoubtedly others. I think a lot of us are hanging out a bit for some open
source
stuff, and there are some CMS tools developing in that area.
Field is developing so fast, it's getting hard to keep up with...

Check ditaxml.com and OASIS site for further info.

Things to look for are systems that have full search indexing and can
handle ditamaps (document containers pointing to document module
contents). Also support for links for re-use of document segments, which is
supposed to be at the heart of DITA.: small bits of documents that can be
"included" into more than one document (and hence, only need to be updated
in small units at a time). It involves a different style of writing because
you can't be sure what context your information might be included into.

Big advantage ? Anyone who has to translate into other languages.
Huge cost saving potential if you get it right, because translation COSTS.
