There's an interesting breakdown of how an agency works out its margin at
http://www.brainbox.com.au/members/brainbox/home.nsf/
0/6FB2960C923B236149256D6C00460E8B?opendocument
which I found helpful when renegotiating my rate recently.
(I've pasted the address over two lines as its very long - I think it is
an archived article)
Another factor to consider is the length of a contract. If you're
hired on the basis that you will be doing a three month contract and the
client likes you enough to keep extending for much longer, sometimes
years, I think there is a strong case for reducing the agent's cut, as
they are getting at least a portion of their percentage for jam after a
while. The consistency of income generated by a good long term contractor
who through their efforts and talent create more income for the
agent than was originally planned should be recognised as more than just
a lucky break for the agent, with benefits being shared
about accordingly. Something to consider when negotiating contract
extensions - you may be able to score a raise from both the
agent and the client.
