I think a document outlining skills and prices is a very good idea, and could 
be a precursor to some form of accreditation in the future - once employers get 
used to the kinds of skills they can expect for the price they are paying. As 
well as a better idea of what tech writers can actually do...

Janice,

I'm not thinking of unionising or even accreditation. I'm thinking of a short 
document to distribute to agencies and employers which outlines our skills and 
expected prices. I do think that any document I or a small group of people 
produce should be reviewed by other technical writers.

More power to you. I definitely think that trying to
come up with reasonable rates to suggest to new
technical writers or contractors as prevailing
rates, and a sliding scale based on experience and
talent, is a good step. However, I think that
"unionizing" or accreditation are not feasible and
I hate to watch a lot of people spend a lot of time
on something that is largely impractical and not
likely to affect the market. However, it's not my
time so good luck to you!
