I'm straying somewhat from Jill's original question, but it's worth making
the point that jpeg is usually a poor format for saving Visio diagrams in.
Visio diagrams are usually hard-edged things without graduations of colour.
So if you must use a raster format, use a lossless one like png. Or gif will
do if you like old technology and if the palette is such as to give you an
adequate result. These will still give good compression.
But Visio is at heart a vector graphics editor and in the overwhelming
majority of cases (I can't think of any exceptions), it will be best to save
to a vector format, like .wmf as MEG suggests, or .emf. Or postscript maybe.
All of these can be imported into Word, Frame and InDesign, and the files
will often be quite small.
