Thanks for your suggestions, folks.
Unfortunately Javascript codes such as \n\r didn't work, and neither did
HTML tags such as <p> </p>
However, I've since tried putting extra carriage returns in the text, and
that worked!! That is, I inserted 1 blank line to begin a new line in the
CHM, and inserted 2 blank lines to have 1 blank line in the CHM. (Apparently
the latter doesn't work in XDK, though.)
