atw: OpenOffice.org paragraph numbering: graveyard of hope

Jean Weber, where are you when we need you?

I was trying to finish an assignement and just wanted the Heading 1 paragraph style to have a chapter number.

So I got absolutely flummoxed between List 1 style, Numbering 1 style, Outline Numbering, and the Format > Bullets and Numbering menu item.  The near useless help offers only reference information (I already had an idea that the Bullets and Numbering dialogue was about, well, bullets and numbering, thanks) but no procedures to show how to set up numbering.  Particularly, numbering to MY specifications -- no need for ugly full stops, brackets, braces, etc. etc.

Also, when setting up the 'builder' for the table of Contents para styles, how do you get rid of a paragraph component?  I accidentally added another chapter number component in the middle of the paragraph but then found I could not delete, not with the Delete key, not with a contest menu, nothing.

The OpenOffice.org folks had better watch out or they will start making Word look good.  FrameMaker may require you to type funny codes like <n+> when setting up a numbered para format but believe me it gives you complete and total control over para formats and is approximately 897 times easier than bloody (sorry, spam filters) OOo.

I feel better now.  Can someone point me to a succinct procedure for:

I live in hope that the Keeper of the Secrets will read this ....

Regards,
Hedley
