<http://www.tinyurl.com/8cbas> is a link set up by Charles Wright, PC
Guru in the Age Green Guide, as featured in his article on page 8 of their
January 19 edition.
Mr Wright recommends its use to replace the utterly hopeless native
WinDoze XP ("Jesus Edition": XP being the Greek initials for Christos)
firewall that you cannot instruct, and I can certainly see why.
In the few weeks since its installation at my home office, Zone Alarm
has blocked 1455 intrusion attempts, none of which have been high
rated.
On my 14 year old daughter's home computer, way up in Far North
Queensland and on "BigSwamp", it has protected her WinDoze 98 OSR
2 PC from about 2000+ attacks in far less time, with about 550 of those
high rated. Obviously something is working a bit better down here at
Pacific Internet. Be extra careful on BigSwamp, believe me.
We are both on dialup connections. Broadband would have been far
worse for receiving such automated hacker attempts.
This little firewall has been absolutely stunning.
Mind you, I loved the Sygate Personal Firewall but, alas, this will no
longer successfully install as it cannot register at first use, ever since
Symantec (One of these days Norton! Pow, right in the kisser!) absorbed
Sygate and killed off their nice freeware, flogging its own (IMNSHO) dud,
bloated and overpriced products instead.
You will need local administrator rights to install this, which I presume
you will have at home. (Don't be naughty and use it at work, now.)
For commercial applications (where you should really be paying, right?)
they have a Pro version.
Note for the unwary: you will have to tell it what to let through as
programs and their updates run and try to access your Internet
connection. I have not tried this when connected to a LAN yet, but it
does look promising.
HTH.
Happy Friday,
Michael Granat
