atw: Mouse as pencil (WAS Huge list of publishing-related tools) [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Hi Stuart and everyone

Thanks for that reference. I spent most of my lunch break, not at the gym
where I really should be, but browsing through some of the sites listed.

One link that got me going was the Editor's Toolkit at www.editorium.com.
I looked at the documentation and came across a section called The Mouse
as Pencil. It describes a really neat idea, which seems kind of obvious
but had never occurred to me. If you put Word commands or macros on the
text shortcut menu (or context menu), it allows you to point at a word,
right-click and select a command that says 'make this word italic' or
'make this word bold' - a bit like using your mouse as an editor's pencil.
(Some editors would probably like to be able to select 'strike through
this word'.) Of course, there are probably lots of other commands you
could handle this way.

I didn't really see the need to buy the Toolkit just for this, so have
been playing around customising my own shortcut menu with simple macros to
do these kinds of things. So far I can point at a word and toggle bold or
toggle italic, or select a range and toggle Initial Caps. Now I just need
some more spare time to develop the idea further!

Anyone got any suggestions of other point-and-click commands like this
that would be good to work on?

Howard
