Gee, that must have happened when I was away for a few years in the
1980s.
That kind of expectation only applies when the employer considers it is
in a seller's market, ie, labour sellers are few and far between. And
that would have been when demand for Australian product exceeded supply
- 'tain't the case any more. We are now in full competition with the
Chinese for production and bird flu.

there used to be a thing for casual employees called "reasonable
expectation of work", where if you have been working a regular number of
hours for over six months, you can reasonably expect to continue working
that amount.
