atw: How are contractors valued?

I've never felt undervalued as a contractor. If I could summarise the usual
attitude very briefly it would be, "We're all busy, competent people, what
do you need?"

I've read some horror stories here and on techwr-l about how TWs have been
treated appallingly by clients. Some TWs say this is not just common but
almost universal. All I can say is that this hasn't been my experience at
all.

The worst I've come across is ignorance of or indifference to what a TW
does ("just tart it up and fix the typos"; "no-one reads the manual
anyway") but personally I've been treated with respect. If you have that,
it's not too hard to work on educating the client.

Cheers

Stuart
