The council in Manchester installed some retractable bollards to stop people using bus lanes. The bollards lower for buses only - some members of the public still try to beat the system. 
The link shows you the layout of the area and then how it works - marvellous.

I suppose the reason why they didn't go for boom gates is because:
        * You don't see it coming; less obvious
        * Causes much, much, more damage
        * More expensive to install
        * Works time, after time, after time...
