atw: Cannot find template - Very long document opening time

Hi all,
My local work environment contains a large number of project
directories, sitting on a network drive, with a many working documents
that have accumulated over the last decade. Individual projects would
work to their own MS Word template located in the relevant project
folder (although not all project documentation used this template -
consistency seems to be highly overrated by some users).
Some time ago, after a server upgrade, the network drive name was
changed, which therefore changed the pathname for all project templates.
Now it takes up to a minute (longer sometimes) for these documents to
open, which I'm assuming is due to Word 2000 not able to find the
document template. If I remove the template link and save the affected
document it returns to normal.
Many of the legacy documents are now in archived, read-only folders, so
therefore I cannot change these documents. Is there some way to tell
Word not to wait until a network time-out before eventually opening the
document anyway?

Thanks in advance
Steve Gould
