atw: Best utilities for TWs (Was: SnagIt / Icon rendering problem)

It's been mentioned before, but a great resource for finding good utilities without licence hassles is Gizmo's 46 Best-ever Freeware Utilities:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm

It's not a warez/download site. Gizmo edits a newsletter called Tech Support Alert and reviews the best utilities in each category (such as: firewall; HTML Editor; FTP Client; Screen Capture; Notepad Replacement; Registry Editor; Outliner; Digital (Bitmap) Editor; Search and Replace).

Generally there are 3-5 recommended tools in each category, with links to the download sites and mini-reviews to help you choose which would suit your situation best (e.g. one might be easiest to configure and use, one might have a particular feature, one might have some restriction on the licence, one might not run on certain platforms).

There are actually 118 categories now. Anyone can read the page with the original 46. If you subscribe to the (free, good) newsletter you can view the full page for categories 47-118.

As a contract TW I find this site invaluable. It's not that I'm against paying for software, but sometimes you need to start capturing and editing screens this afternoon, and you know it will take at least a week to get the client's warring bureaucracies to approve the purchase and installation of some $50 product.
