atw: Apart from using Word 2002, what else am I doing wrong?

Okay Word 2002 (AKA V10 or 11, I'm losing count?) Gurus,
<<Caution, longish post.>>

Here is something that might even prove to be a challenge,
for some of you.

Having just migrated - I won't say "upgraded" - from Word 9
(AKA 2000), which is in use by default at a customer site,
(by de-fault of de-customer's IT department, I suspect)
I am going nuts here. It is bad enough having the new way
of creating new files, where you are no longer presented
with a list of available templates but, rather, are sent
off to a sidebar panel that asks you to base your new doc
on a file, for which you have to browse. Argh!

The logo graphics from my latest template get lost (and
replaced with same size rectangles with a little red, but
dysfunctional cross / close button) in the subsequent
document because Word 2002 (with or without "Update
automatic links at open" being enabled in the Tools >
Options > General tab) goes ahead and corrupts them to
something utterly useless. Oh joy!

My template, on which this file is based has absolute
(local drive) paths for its logo graphics, which are kept
external to the document (with the \d - do not include
command at the end of the {INCLUDEPICTURE ... MERGEFORMAT}
statement). The template and its graphics display fine
every time that DOT file is opened, but a new document
based on it only displayed properly when it was created.
Reloading the new document, after having closed Word to do
a working files backup, corrupts the graphics link file
paths.

For example, a link to a graphic that, in the template,
is "C:\\Write_Ideas\\Graphics\\logos\\file.bmp" becomes an
utterly useless link to "../../../Graphics/logos/file.bmp".

This despite my having I gone to the trouble of
individually locking (Ctrl+F11 or Edit > Links > Lock) the
graphics fields in the template and, subsequently in the
document based on that.

...and to top it all off, after I replace (using Ctrl+H or
Edit > Replace > Replace all) those paths, when displaying
field codes (Tools > Options > View tab > Field codes) the
moment I save (Ctrl+S) they all revert to their former gory
(yes I do mean gory, as in what a mess!).

Is there something in the fact that my template was
originally developed under Word 2000, then modified under
Word 2002? All of the original Word 2000 template macros
work a treat and I'm successfully adding and using new ones
in Word 2002 but, what else is happening is very strange
indeed.

Conclusion? Cry for help to the caring and sharing folk
at Austechwriter.

"Help!" Please :-) (Off-list if you prefer.)

Thanks in anticipation of any assistance or useful advice
that you can provide with the above.

Word (2002) fails me!

Cheers,

Michael
