atw: Advice for student technical writer (long)

This is well after the original mail Erica but I hope you are still reading
the list.
I found the most useful boost to my tech writing career, which took off from
a totally different career, was joining the relevant societies. Very early
on I joined the ASTC and the STC and put in a lot of time into going to
meetings, conferences, and meeting people. I also put considerable time into
committees and other activities which I thoroughly enjoyed and felt was a
fair exchange for the benefits I was receiving. I am still contributing 15
years later - but perhaps a little less now.
You must get out and meet people and as they say 'network'. You must also
put your time into supporting the groups as you learn a lot by doing this
and it gives you a great feeling to be helping others who are in the
beginner stage you once were.
Two of my biggest and continual clients I was introduced to by friends in
the ASTC.
Sorry about the length of this but I have for some time wanted to say the
above and now seemed like a good time.
Cheers to you all
Jill
