Hello everyone. As a new user of Adobe Creative Suite 2, I should let
people know about installation on windows 2K. We purchased the latest
upgrade version of CS2 for InDesign, although all software in the suite
will be useful.
The machine was using Win2K to SP2 with (then 512 Mb of RAM) and now with
1280 Mb of RAM. The installation proceeded to load 4 disks worth of data.
It is a huge load, with nearly twenty minutes of load time and requiring
multiple tens of Gb of memory. (It is without doubt the largest
application installation I have ever loaded).
On completion of the load, the Indesign application didn't work. I
repeatedly attempted installation and all attempts failed.
Adobe support suggested this was something that occurred in CS 1.3 as well
and directed me to the relevant documentation. This did not work. Don't
waste your time.
It was then suggested that I get Win2K up to SP4. (Something I had not
checked.) All updates were eventually loaded and I attempted to install
InDesign again. Installation failed again.
I uninstalled all Adobe applications presently on the computer, including
the CS2 software, which Adobe support believed I would not need to do. I
then went into Reg Edit and removed all references to Adobe products in
the Root Classes only (Adobe support didn't think this would be required).
I was going to progressively remove all references in RegEdit although it
turns out I only needed to remove Root Classes it seems.
Installation of InDesign as well as all other associated applications
appears to have successfully loaded now.
Summary is don't attempt to install on win2k until you are on SP4 and all
Adobe products are uninstalled. I am still not sure whether you really
need to go to RegEdit however I did and afterwards the installation
definitely worked for me.
Other observations are that you need buckets of memory, 1280 Mb of RAM is
still only just adequate, while 512 Mb of RAM is workable but really too
slow. If you cannot get upgraded hardware and are running 512 Mb of RAM, I
would recommend staying without CS2! However if you can get CS2 and the
other bits, grab it!
And finally, many thanks do go to Adobe support, who gave me enough to
help me through the problem, although because it was a new one, could not
put a finger on it.
PS (Incidentally, I was never asked for previous version information
during the installation process either... ;-) )
