atw: ASTC(NSW) Sydney meeting -- Grammatical war and peace (27 April 2005)

In writing for your readers, do you want to make 'p-e-a-c-e' with your
readers by making your message Pleasant, Effective, Alive, Clear and
Enduring?

Or do you prefer to make 'w-a-r', by making your message Waffly,
Ambiguous and Ridiculous?

Attend this Central Sydney workshop and find out the difference. Deb Doyl=
e will give each attendee a four-page handout of the 'Parts of Speech' an=
d 'Punctuation' exercises--58 questions--from her book Grey Areas and Gre=
mlins: A Grammar and Punctuation Refresher. Pretending we're editors and =
using a blue pen, we'll have one minute to write our answer to each quest=
ion. We'll then interact with Deb to mark our answers and allocate oursel=
ves a score out of 58. What will your score be? Will you recognise Deb's =
favourite problems such as 'the pathetic fallacy', nominalisation, lack o=
f verbs, faulty pronoun antecedents, unhyphenated compound adjectives and=
=20a comma placed between two sentences?
