Yes. Many, many people refer to a hyphen as
a dash. If you do this, hold out your hand so
I can slap it with a ruler. And many people
actually *use* a hyphen in place of a dash. Hold
out your other hand if you do this.

It may or may not interest some of you to know 
that there is a transatlantic difference in the 
handling of dashes. If you compare traditional
British typography with traditional American
typography, you will find that the Brits often
use a spaced en dash (that is, "space, en dash,
space") where the Yanks more often use an
unspaced em dash.

Fascinating, huh! This is one of those things,
like the positioning of commas and full stops 
inside or outside of quote marks, on which some
people will foolishly declaim that *their* way
is the *right* way. God love 'em.
