[austechwriter] Re: Numbering issues on Word 2002 on XP?

Word 2k saw 'stable' numbering for the first time. Didn't I post my
solutions on here? If you dont have a copy of my wonder set of macros for
fixing list problems in Word 2k just ask, I shall post them on here too.

Essentially the guts of it all is:

Word stores the Restart Numbering 'marker' as a manual format. Thus,
updating the styles by any method will break list numbering and or cause
formatting problems with the restart entry itself.

So, our bag of tricks against this is:

A RestartNumbering button to restart the list. My macro

RestartListsAfterHeadings - When numbering breaks badly, most real world
situations are dealt with extremely effectively by this little gem of a
macro.

The MVP Method: (I hate it - its a sure fire screwup for technical writers
maintaining user prepped dox) Every numbered list is an outline list. Every
list level 1 entry is formatted to be white, 1 pt high. Restart points are
just one of these paras, who cares what their numbers are, we cant see em.
We do see the 2nd level restarting perfectly though through ALL situations,
so it may be of use to folk as well.

Redo all your list templates from scratch in your templates. New normal.dot,
reset all galleries. Ideally set via VBA. Each list template points to one
style. No other styles use the based on of these styles. Maggie each
document into a fresh virgin copy of this template and start breathing a
sigh of relief.

Much more available in my Word Spellbook and my Word VBA Spellbooks,
naturally.

Subject: [austechwriter] Numbering issues on Word 2002 on XP?

Hi all

I've just moved onto Word 2002 on XP, and have been preparing a few
templates - faithfully allowing for SEQ fields rather than automatic
numbering.

I've been asked to justify using the SEQ fields - the reason given was
that the latest version of Word is much more stable with automatic
numbering. I haven't witnessed stability in this area yet - mainly
because I've been using SEQ fields - could anyone tell me if 2002 is
(magically) more stable than 2000, or if it still remains one of Word's
most special features? (If the numbering does work, it's going to be
very difficult to adjust to!)

Thanks
Elizabeth
