Thanks for that tip.  Of course, I could have done something really
intelligent in the first place, by typing:

     % man tcsh

which would have listed the files read and interpreted on invocation of
tcsh.  For those still awake at this point, they are:

     /etc/csh.cshrc
     /etc/csh.login
     ~/.tcshrc
     ~/.cshrc
     ~/.history
     ~/.login

At logout, these files are read:

     /etc/csh.logout
     ~/.logout

Sure enough, the prompt string is changed by a script in /etc/csh.cshrc .

If anybody can direct me to an active mailing list for Mac OS X I would be
very grateful.  I still have not been able to find a good one.
