Melanie,

I can't recommend any particular coursework,
but some hands-on programming knowledge -- 
even from a self-study book or online course -- 
would be a good thing to have. I'd also recommend 
studying some standard general textbooks on systems
development in order to learn about methodologies 
and tools -- including specifications and other design 
documents.
