This is a good point. Those considering broadening their expertise
should also look at adjacent areas to technical writing. In my own
career I have moved from writing to documentation systems analysis=20
to organisational knowledge management activities. A good writer
develops real analysis and assimilation skills, that should be=20
reasonably portable if you look beyond the content itself into the
circumstances that generate the need for developing content.

These have certainly contributed to my own career stability.

I also strongly recommend that you become proficient with XML and
the concepts of structured documentation, as these technologies
will form the bases for the development of semantic webs (i.e.,
documentation with built-in intelligence).
