Sorta related, I'm using a Mac after a long abstinence and finding that the
media keys on no keyboard, Atreus included, control anything, and I can't
confirm that any keyboard even sends keycodes for them. Does anyone have
hints about that?

Thomas, you may want to check my QMK firmware keymap, as that definitely
controls the volume on OS X.

Unfortunately these key codes do not work either. Maybe I need to
figure out with an oscilloscope if the key codes are sent and ignored
by Karabiner, or not sent at all by the keyboard.
I see what you mean. I don't think you need to pull out the
oscilloscope; I can confirm that Linux definitely registers those
keycodes, at least on the default firmware. But if you have a utility to
rebind certain keycodes to other functions, maybe you could change those
keys to send something like F14 and F15 and translate them into volume
actions in software.
