I would say it's because the fn key and the shift key have basically the
same function; this is why their positions are mirrored. Putting shift
on the left is because most people are used to hitting the shift key
with their left hand, so this makes it a little bit easier to learn.
But of course I encourage everyone to experiment if they have ideas they
think would be smoother, and also to share these ideas if they work out well.
Personally I don't find shift-esc easier to hit than fn-esc, but if you
do (maybe if you often have one hand on the mouse) then you should try that.
