15% of the problem is trolls. 30% is people getting bent out of
shape about them and firing off angry replies (in the name of the
list's original intent, no less). The other 55% is people determined
to take things the wrong way.
We started out a year ago as a bunch of (mostly) musicians with some common
interests and goals...
Have we really accomplished this to any meaningful degree?
Uhh...*Yes*, actually.
...how much better off would we all be now - how much of
the goals would REALLY have been attained by now - if some of us hadn't
aliented people by abusing this list and using it for their own personal
agenda??
I don't see that it would've made that much difference. Why would
what other people say prevent you from saying what you wanted? What
would've happened otherwise? How is the state of the list keeping
things from happening? What ideas haven't been put forth or
developed because of the state of the list?
If people are going to take things personally, getting venomously pissed
off when someone dares to think differently than they do, or maybe because
they come from a totally different background than they do, then these
people do have personal agenda altogether different (and opposed) to the
original community building goals listed above.
Once again, I refer you to my experience with Usenet.
Perhaps it's being tolerated - we're ignoring it, hoping it will
go away on it's own?
That's the *last* thing that's happening. Most of the bile comes
from people *not* ignoring it. Trust me--I have years and years of
personal experience with this, as someone who's historically been
just stellar at not ignoring it.
What is really happening is the "nice" people are
being quieter (or disappearing) and the "mean" people are being louder.
And that'll continue if you drop off this list. Look, forewarned is
fore-armed. Don't you have a filter on your e-mail program?
Nice. Hope you guys are happy now that you've had your power trip.
Well, they probably are. BTW, how many of them ever show up to the gigs?
