[atlantaprog] Re: open letter to S3

Before I respond directly to Allen's message, I'd just like to chime in
on the ProgDay issues Wheat brought up...
Just for the record, my family and work obligations prevent me from
actually attending this sort of thing, however much I'd like to. But as
far as ARIA representation up at ProgDay, I think Mark has it right on,
and Wade's solution to the potential accounting problems is fine.
$10/CD is perfect in that kind of situation. If all bands send the same
number of CDs, and all bands price them the same, then the accounting is
no sweat. Count us in on anything even remotely resembling that idea.

Now, to respond to Allen: Thank you very much for your kind words.
That means a lot coming from you, A. Recording is really our focus (and
my specialty) so packing the record with goo was always our primary
motivation.
The full show circa 2002 had stage sets, puppets, add'l scripted &
costumed performers, lighting FX, fog machines, overhead projections,
audience participation, etc. We were very much after more of a
performance art kind of thing, and I think we largely succeeded (at
least part of the time).
But it required massive effort to pull it all off in a rock club, and we
could never book a more theatrical venue. When we lost our "fourth man"
(the talented and inimitable Joel Ball) in charge of FX..... well,
you've seen the dull results. Just another band from ATL. White lab
coats don't make it. Insert Zappa joke here. The obstacles in the way
were significant, and the returns very slight.
Anyway, the entirety of our recorded and live efforts are/were
subordinate to the concept -- which is more than just some lame riff on
crap Man or Astroman has done for 10+ years. Daemon is part 1 of a
concept piece with a rather extensive backstory, the gist of which is
pretty clear from our website and "Daemon"'s liner notes. IMHO, it's
worth checking out. But objectivity is not my strong suit...!

Hey Solution guys,

I have been listening to your CD lately and I have to say that it is
one of the best pieces of conceptual sound art I have heard in a long
time. You simply MUST figure out a way to perform this stuff live,
especially in a way that does justice to it. It really doesn't belong
in a rock club - it belongs in a theater, augmented with extra
musicians and actors and tons of multi-media. You guys need to find
people to cover your instrumental parts so you can really get into your
characters. It's incredible. I can see you guys right up there with the
Blue Man Group when it comes to conceptual rock theater.

Yeah, I understand the realties of bring something like that to
fruition - it's pretty daunting - but I HAD to say it! I do hope you'll
be back on the live scene soon.

AWG

PS hey ARIA members, if you've only seen Solution Science Systems live
and not yet heard the CD, you are NOT getting the true S3 experience.
Their band performances, while admittedly quite good, just DON'T
capture the essence of what these guys are about!
